Protea stamps

Coil issues

The early printings of the coil stamps were on paper that was relatively matte. Some -- but not all -- reprints were on a more glossy paper which is not extremely shiny, but is definitely gloss paper when compared to the earlier matte. At some point, control numbers began appearing on the back of every fifth stamp on the reprints. A different color ink was used for the numbers on each value -- black ink was used for the control number on the 1c, red ink for the 2c, green ink for the 5c, and blue ink for the 10c.
