RSA 1977 Definitive Controls Specialized.
Some of values for this issue were printed by the rotogravure process, and others were printed on litho presses; and both processes were used for some values. The litho and rotogravure control blocks are easy enough to distinguish -- litho printings for early releases had the plate numbers in the lower right corner of the sheet, and most of the numbers for any given value had the letter P as a prefix; litho printings for reprints are always reversed in white from a colored box; and rotogravure printings were always without prefix and printed in the color of the cylinder being used. See these examples:
Do you see the capitalized A at the bottom of the rotogravure illustration? That A signifies the A Pane of the printing sheet -- two panes of 100 stamps (10 rows of 10 stamps each) were in a pane, and the rotogravure panes were always labeled A or B as the case may be. After printing, the printing sheets were trimmed down into the two panes and delivered to the post office. Originally, the litho printings were also labeled like this, but for most later printings the post office did not label the panes, although they still printed two panes on a sheet. Due to minor constant flaws, it is possible in every case to identify the two separate panes; because I have no way of knowing which side of the printing sheet the pane was on, I cannot say with certainty whether these panes would have been A or B if labeled when printed. For this reason, I refer to the panes as P1 and P2 (Pane 1 and Pane 2). Note that for the R1 and R2 values, there were 50 stamps in a pane (5 rows of 10 stamps per row). Click here to see a full pane of R1 stamps
Note that a "0" printing is always the original printing; the first reprint of a value is marked "1", the second reprint "2", and so on. Only the rotogravure printings have this printing number in the side margin.
Various perforation configurations exist. Some have the side margin imperforate and one extension hole in the bottom margin; I refer to these as Type 0:1. Those that exist with side margin imperforate and bottom margin perforated through are Type 0:2; those with one extension hole in both margins are Type 1:1; those with the side margin perforated through and one extension hole in the bottom margin are Type 2:1; and those with both margins perforated through are Type 2:2. I know of no other configurations, and would be very pleased to hear from you should you be fortunate enough to own another type. Also, although many of the values were issued in both perf. 12½ and perf. 14 formats, this only affects the control block collector for the 20c value, where I have noted the difference in bold type.
All the stamps were printed on coated, phosphorised paper, the quality of which leaves something to be desired. There is a great difference in the whiteness of the paper between different values, and even within the same printing of several values, and this is particularly noticeable in the 2c., 4c. and R2 issues. The difference in the paper color is much more vivid under a UV lamp, where some of the printings are on paper which fluoresces bright white while others become distinctly off-white. The differences are so extreme that at one time I believed that the paper had started out off-white and had improved greatly by the end of the printings; it is now clear that this is not the case, and the lack of quality control during the papermaking process is what caused the variances. The thickness of the paper is by no means consistent either; I own a 2c. control on very thin paper, and from the same printing a control on very thick paper. The paper can also range from quite glossy to relatively matte. To sum up then, the paper whiteness can go from off-white to bright white, with intermediate stages of whiteness; and the thickness of the paper can vary from thin to very thick. I do own a 4c. control, 6 printing, A Pane, which does not fluoresce, on either side of the sheet, under the lamp, and where the coating can be seen to stop, with the naked eye, about 2 or 3 mm from the bottom of the pane. The color of this thin strip under the lamp is extremely dark, much darker than the rest of the pane. I have therefore listed this paper error under this value and printing.
All issues were on paper with polyvinyl alcohol gum (similar to that used for the Machin issues in Great Britain). The gum does appear to have a light yellowish dye, probably so the gum could easily be seen during production. This gum tint does vary in intensity too, but once again the differences are incidental, and are not worthy of separate listings, because they occur within printing runs. It would appear that different papers were used for gravure and litho issues; the gravure papers measure an average of .0040" (102 microns) thick, while the litho papers average .0037" (94 microns) -- and over a large number of samples, that number is too great to be mere chance. The thinnest paper I have found so far is .0033" (84 microns) on the 30c and R1 values, while the thickest paper to date is .0046" (117 microns) on the 2c and 3c values. Note that the thickest and thinnest values are for extremes and are not the norm for those issues. The 2c value had the thickest average of all at .0043", or 109 microns.
Much of the pane identification on this page is due to the now defunct "Atlas Catalogue of R.S.A.", published by Glen Carpendale and Coen Slagt. Hard to find this catalog now, but it is invaluable to serious Republic collectors; snap it up if you seen one offered.
When identifying unmarked panes I often need to refer to a specific stamp in a control block, so I have numbered the stamps from stamp 1 to stamp 6 to make such references easy to understand.
For ease of reference, I have numbered each control block from SVV 1 upwards (SVV simply being my initials).
The genus name Protea is named for the Greek god Proteus, who could change his shape at will. Proteas come in a wide range of forms and sizes.
